History

The present-day Chamber of Commerce had its origin in 1951/1952. At that time a group of business people from the Badger to Botwood area got together to focus their attention on issues relevant to the development of the business life of the region. Most of the early concerns were related to freight service and freight rates. The area economy was expanding, the effects of Confederation were being felt, and the Grand Falls paper company (Anglo-Newfoundland Development Company) was beginning to loosen its influence on the expansion of private enterprise. The name of the first "Chamber" was the EXPLOITS VALLEY BOARD OF TRADE, and the first president was T.H. Anderson of Grand Falls. In the early 1960's the name of the Chamber was changed to the CENTRAL NEWFOUNDLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

By 1970, under the presidency of F. Dalley of Botwood many of the issues were related to specific communities and the decision was made to form local Chambers of Commerce to better address these issues, and in 1971 the GRAND FALLS CHAMBER OF COMMERCE came into being under the presidency of John Moore. The Chamber worked with the Grand Falls Town Council on issues of mutual concern and had made numerous submissions to all levels of government on behalf of the business community.

At about the same time a Chamber of Commerce was formed in each of the communities of Botwood and Bishop's Falls. Also, during the same period a Windsor Chamber of Commerce was formed under the guidance of Don Riff. In 1988 it was re-activated and the President was John McLennon.

When the towns of Windsor and Grand Falls amalgamated in 1991 the two Chambers joined forces as well to become the GRAND FALLS-WINDSOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. The first President was Wayne Morris. The major areas of activity of the Chamber during this period was on Taxation and related reforms, Transportation (freight rates, modes and frequencies of service, highway improvement), Education, Tourism, and the Town's development.

In 1996 the EXPLOITS REGIONAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE was formed merging the Chambers from Grand Falls-Windsor, Bishop's Falls and Botwood under the presidency of Len Winsor. To this date the ERCC represents the entire Exploits Region with a total membership of approximately 200. The Chamber has been a strong advocate in representing its members and, indeed, the entire Exploits Region on important economic development issues.
